From next week, consumers in the UK and Ireland can buy the new low-sugar milk stick Milkybar Wowsomes in the supermarket. This milk stick uses a new sweetener without reducing its sweetness. In the case of taste, the sugar content can be reduced by 30%.
Nestlé developed a new technology in 2016 that, by increasing the porosity of sugar molecules, can produce the same amount with a smaller portion of sugar. Sweet, the company likened this process to hollowing out the interior of sugar crystals.
This launch of Milkybar Wowsomes is the first time this technology has been applied to products since it was released in 2016. Unlike regular milk sticks, the outer layer of Milkybar Wowsomes is wrapped in chocolate and the inside is a cream center made up of lighter sugar and crispy oatmeal.
According to Nestlé, the new product has undergone more than 300 recipe adjustments, emphasizing that the product does not contain artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors or preservatives, and is also a healthy gluten-free food. Parents can choose healthier food for their children.
However, despite the reduced sugar content, Milkybar Wowsomes uses only 3% less milk than the regular version of the milk stick because it uses extra natural ingredients.

Bloomberg pointed out that Nestlé is mainly forced by social pressure. But the new sweeteners can only be used for candy and not for beverages. Nestlé will launch the low-calorie San Pellegrino next month, which uses low-calorie stevia.
